Begin your backwater barging trip at Kumarakom to Allappuzha, floating slowly past coconut palms dipping down towards the water and serene villages, as the moving landscape creates a living portrait of Kerala’s rural life. Other country crafts will go by, some carrying a load of fresh banana or coir, others filled with people travelling to nearby villages. Travelling on the backwaters is a relaxing, idyllic holidays in a picturesque setting, the palm trees and sun dipped waterways of Kerala wait for you.

Itinerary

Day 1Welcome to India: Delhi

Upon arrival at the airport in Delhi, you will be met by our representative, assisted through formalities and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2Delhi

After breakfast, discover Delhi in all its majesty. Start the day with a Cycle rickshaw ride through Old Delhi. Here you will see Red Fort, the most opulent Fort and Palace of the Mughal Empire. Also visit Raj Ghat, the memorial site of the Mahatma Gandhi; Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India; and Chandni Chowk, the bustling and colourful market of the old city. Continue to New Delhi. You will visit two monuments from Delhi’s past – Humayun’s Tomb and Qutub Minar. Your drive takes you along the ceremonial avenue, Rajpath, past the imposing India Gate, Parliament House and the Presidential residence. Return to your hotel for overnight. (D)

Day 3Delhi / Cochin

Transfer to the airport for your short flight to Cochin. Cochin gives one of Kerala’s most interesting experiences, this is a natural harbour created by the famed underwater Malabar mudbanks whose unique quality ensures that the rougher the seas are outside, the calmer the waters are within the harbour. A Jewish Synagogue, Portuguese Churches, Mosques & Hindu temples co-exist amicably in a typical example of Indian secularism. Overnight at your hotel. (B)

Day 4Cochin

Enjoy an early morning boat cruise on the enchanting backwaters through the coconut groves and quite lagoons. In the afternoon, visit the sights of Cochin. Visit the 400 years old Jewish Synagogue. Later at night, witness the Kathkali Dance performance – the famous dance drama of Kerala. Overnight at the hotel. (B)

Day 5Cochin / Kumarakom

Morning drive to to Kumarakom. Kumarakom is bound by the Vembanad Lake on two sides, to swaying paddy fields on one side and a bird sanctuary on the other. Relax in the quiet atmosphere of the resort amidst picturesque surrounding. Evening sunset cruise on a traditional rice boat. There after the traditional “Theyyam” dancers who will enchant you with their rhythmic chanting. And the spectacle of the “Kalari” martial art specialists gliding silently in from Vembanad Lake, with torches blazing in the silent night, will linger forever in your memory. Overnight at your hotel. (B)

Day 6Kumarakom / Alleppy

In the morning, enjoy an incredibly different experience just floating on the waters in a country craft and absorbing this unusual representation of Kerala life. You begin at Kumarakom, breathtakingly green village slumbers by the sides. Reach Allappuzha (Alleppy) which is hailed as the Venice of the East, because of its intricate maze of backwaters, canals and bridges. Stay overnight at your hotel. (B)

Day 7Alleppy / Cochin / Mumbai

In the morning, drive to Cochin and transfer to airport in time to board flight for Mumbai. Later take a boat excursion to the Elephanta Caves on an island in Bombay Harbor. In the evening drive along Marine Drive and Chowpaty Beach on horse drawn carriages. Overnight in Mumbai. (B)
